The September meeting of the LOWER TRINITY VALLEY BIRD CLUB will be held on, Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in the meeting room of the First Liberty National Bank located at 1900 Sam Houston in Liberty. From Hwy. 90 turn on Travis Street, between Kentucky Fried Chicken and Whataburger, cross over the railroad tracks and take a right into the bank parking lot. Be sure to come early at 9:30 a.m. our "Birder's Chat" time. If you have any questions call President Gary Holmes at 281-576-0574 or e-mail him at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Our Speakers for September will be David Knutson and LTVBC members: the presentation will be over the Frio River: Birds and Butterflies.

David is an ExxonMobil annuitant who works as a consultant in the refining industry.  To paraphrase a popular bumper sticker, "I was not a founding member to the LTVBC, but I got here as quick as I could."  A past President of the LTVBC, David joined the club as a novice birder after he was adopted, so to speak, by a really great group of ladies (Mary Ann, Ellen, Jody, Sue, Barbara and Ceal) who were just as eager as he was to learn all about the local birds and birding hot spots.  Along with bird watching his hobbies include photography, kayaking, fishing and anything to do with nature watching.

David will serve as a program facilitator as the participants share memories and photographs from the LTBVC's visit to Concan Texas in May of this year.  Contributing photographers are Steve Abbey, Carlton Collier, Odell Casey, Stuart Marcus and David Knutson.

Guests and visitors are always welcome. If you have a backyard bird feeder or have an interest in birds and nature, the Lower Trinity Valley Bird Club is a great opportunity to learn more about birds, meet fascinating people, and take part in birding/nature activities.

PostHeaderIcon Counting Chimney Swifts at the Rice Dryer in Dayton

Have you wondered what those folks, sitting in lawn chairs at Dayton's rice dryer parking lot on Thursday evenings around sundown, looking through binoculars and spotting scopes are doing??? Members of the Lower Trinity Valley Bird Club are counting Chimney Swifts as they go to roost in some of the holes of the old American Rice Growers Association rice dryer.

The Bird Club invites you to join in for a "Swift Night Out" on Thursday, August 26 at 7:30 pm in the parking lot of the rice dryer located at the intersection of FM 1960 and State Hwy 321 in Dayton. This is usually the week we count the highest number of swifts, sometimes over 300. To keep up with the progress of "Swifts Over Dayton" check our page on the Houston Audubon Society's web site at http://www.houstonaudubon.org/index.cfm/menuItemID/689.htm

We will continue to meet on Thursday evenings in the parking lot until the birds migrate south in November. Stop by just before sundown to begin counting. It takes about ½ hour as the swifts go to roost right at dark. Sometimes we even spot a raccoon or great-horned owl in the area looking for a "swift" meal. Bring a lawn chair.
